Limitations And Boundaries

I’m a writer. I am very good with words. When given the opportunity I bend them to my will and make magic with every syllable. And when I say I write I pretty much write everything. Poems, articles, papers, songs, books, etc. All this is said to say this: I stay in my wheelhouse. That’s not to say I won’t try to do anything new but I know my limitations. You’ll never catch me trying to juggle, sing opera (despite the fact that I actually can sing), or even try to paint a masterpiece. That’s usually the safest bet you can make, honestly.

But what happens when someone steps outside their wheelhouse?

Sometimes you get interesting results.

Sometimes good, sometimes bad.

For example when Cee Lo Green stretched out and started singing it turned out really well. It gave us Gnarls Barkley and great songs like the most famous Gnarls Barkley effort “Crazy” or his solo hit “Fool For You”. That song just goes in every time you hear it. Really and truly.

Then there are times where it goes completely sideways.

Case in point, singers rapping.

It’s a novel idea, at best. I mean, I could maybe see the thought process that they are working under here. Singing can’t be as difficult as rapping, can it? So they venture out to try it. As with anything you have highs and lows.

Chris Brown scores points for his rhymes on “Look At Me Now”. But on the other side of it I feel like he had no place amongst the rest of the rappers on the BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher. Kudos for trying and an E for effort but it didn’t do it for me.

The same can be said of Trey Songz. I fell in love with a few tracks that he rapped on, one being “Top Of The World”. As of yet I cannot see a downside because he seems to keep to the subject matter he knows as opposed to being tough like Mr. Brown does. So maybe he’s the exception to the rule here.

Then there’s Justin Beiber. I can halfway accept his sway over young girls. But I cannot believe him as a rapper. I think the fact that Asher Roth is a close friend has him believing that rapping is something for him to be doing. I’m not saying he can’t rap but he should stick to his day job. Listen to a track from Chris Brown’s Boy In Detention mixtape if you don’t believe me. (The track is called “Ladies Love Me”)

The thing is everyone should know their limitations. As such rapping should (in most cases) be left to real rappers.

Ear Hustlin' (Fall Back Issue 2011)

Chillin' with Tazzy - the Chief Editor

Whut it do?  Thank you for checking out my section!  As you can see...I am exploring new ideas and trying to take Royalty Magazine to an even higher level.  So far the response is good...please make sure you leave comments, feedback, etc.

Blackout Mode

This is a new section that I like to call Blackout Mode.  I will feature music, videos, etc from two of my favorite rappers "Redman" & "Methodman".  I will also show videos from their entourages and collaborative emcees.  I don't think they get the props or credit they deserve so with me being a fan & a media outlet to the underground, I am giving respect where respect is due!  If you haven't copped that Blackout II yet, please make sure you do...don't sleep!  Hiphop at its finest!!!!!!!!

This month "RuntDawg" graces the cover of Royalty Magazine.  RuntDawg is signed to Redman's label "GillaHouse".  Click here for exclusive interview with Runt as well as to check out his feature and videos!...

I would like to take this opportunity to feature "Big Skilly" of Big Skilly Films.  From the Kartel Family...to Big Skilly Films...Skilly has his hands in a little bit of everything.  He not only directs/edits some of the dopest music videos out of NY, but he also has put together a few must see documentaries and shows.  Big Skilly and his team go hard with the music, videos and of course the grind so make sure you stay up with them.
What else is Skilly up to?  Lets just say he is taking his creativity to a whole other level.  Check out some of his recent work:

Da Brat/Jermaine Dupri

Lil Wayne/Nicki Minaj

 Jay Z/Nas

Nas/Kelis

Drake/Nicki Minaj

 Swiss Beats/Alicia Keyz

Jay Z/Beyonce

I think that Skilly is not only creative for doing these pics but it is just hilarious!  I've seen some bad photoshop jobs before and these are far from that.  He is def skilled in what he does and makes them look so authentic.  I can tell you off top when I first saw the Jermaine Dupri + Da Brat pic I thought it was real lol.

Anyways, as you can see Skilly be clowning...I had the opportunity to ask him about the motivation behind his picture.  Here's how it went down...

Royalty Magazine: You currently post up random pics in your "Pic of the Day" segment. What is your motivation behind this segment and how did you get started doing it?

Skilly:  I started to do this to generate traffic to my page.  To be honest, not everyone is going to come to your page and view all the hard work you post so I mix it up.  It's like when you have to give your dog his medicine and you mix it in the food...Thats what I do I mix it up! Once people come view pics then they end up browsing my page and see all my work...And they enjoy it!...Truth be told I have over 4000 friends on facebook, but I get more comments from people not on my friends list. I think mainly because my page is open to the public and those people that stop by eventually end up adding me as a friend...

Royalty Magazine: Sounds good.  You have posted some crazy, funny, weird and outright hilarious photos...what are a few of your favorites? Which ones have gotten the most buzz (good or bad)?

Skilly:  Yeah I post some crazy stuff Lml...But you gotta remember I live In New York City so crazy things are always happening.  I'm just glad that I get to take a photo of the craziness and share it with everyone...I posted up a pic once of a homosexual ad that was posted on a telephone, and that shit turned into a frenzy. I was getting messages from people not even on my friends list complaining, telling me to take it down because they thought I was trying to start a war with the Gays (which I wasn't). I guess the comments got some of them mad, but hey it's the opinion of people who have a belief & think thats wrong...

Royalty Magazine: Yeah I know what you mean.  An opinion is just that an opinion...as long as you have your beliefs that's what matters.  You also started creating your own pics such as combining Jay z/Beyonce, Da Brat/Jermaine Dupri, Nas/Kelis, etc...what motivated you to start creating these pics?  I've also noticed that when you combine these artists faces/features you tend to stick to a certain theme (such as Nas + Kelis, 50 cent + Ja Rule, Rick Ross + 50 cent)...have you came across any challenges as far as some artists not lining up well or harder to recreate?  If so, what was the result?

Skilly: Yeah they were funny...I'm a hiphop junky through & through (I Breathe This)...My man was fucking around with photoshop merging actors and famous people so I decided...lets do rappers...So we did a few and people loved them...I started getting requests so I did them...And as always I got more traffic to my page. People started checking out my
videos asking for prices, so it worked out good. I did some that was straight up ugly so I didn't post those.

Royalty Magazine: lol I feel you.  You have also done countless music videos as well as documentaries. I remember seeing a glimpse of your skills when you started doing the "Hanging with the Kartel Family" series. You have def come along way since then...Can we expect any more volumes of the "Hanging with the Kartel Family?" What else can we expect to see from Big Skilly Films in 2011/2012?

Skilly: I stopped doing "Hanging with the Kartel Family" I'm working on "Big Skilly Films Tv" now...I switched it up a bit so you get to follow me around and see the shit I go through...I'm wrapping up my "Big Skilly Films Presents Vol.1 Dvd". I'm also working on my Hiphop documentary called "I AM.."  I'm also working on a few short films that's going to be crazy!  I will still be dropping videos in between so gotta stay busy, which I like to be.

Royalty Magazine: Sounds good!  Any comments/last words/shot outs?

Skilly:
I would like to thank all my supporters...cause when I've had enough of the bullshit you guys are the ones who motivate me to go hard and that's what I Need...

The Showcase (Summer 2011)

And the light shines on...

Seven Davis Jr.

Singer Producer Seven Davis jr a.k.a Sam Seven has retired from the music game. For those who don't know this artist dont feel left out. This artist keeps a low profile.

Sevens been behind the international scenes of both the underground and mainstream industries doing his own thing, helping new artists off the ground and assisting established artists in the rejuvination of their musical careers for years.

Seven was raised in the gospel industry, groomed for the mainstream industry but matured in the underground/indie industry.

Seven has worked with and performed on the same bill with artists like Mc Hammer, Traxamillion, Dwele, Slum Village,  Lyrics Born, Juvenile, Platinum Pied Pipers, Mc Invincible, Jennifer Johns, Kim Hill, Myka Nine, Dave Dub, DJ Architech, Peace of Freestyle Fellowship, Cherie Johnson (actress), J. Mitchell, Erik Rico and most recently Shafiq Husayn of Sa Ra Creative Partners.

So one might ask, why would an artist that would seem to have so much possibility retire?  The answer is "life". Seven feels he's been doing music for so long that he wants to focus on other things.

"I'm not only an artist or musician. There are other callings i want to answer now. Im not famous or anything but i've had some great accomplishments, memories, got to meet all my favorites, im good for now" - Seven Davis jr

Technically Seven has not officially retired. Currently he's an inhouse producer for long time comarade Dave Dubs record label ISOLATED WAX a division of Myka Nine's M9 Entertainment and he still produces for friends that are currently "still in the game" here and there.
Most recently he worked on MC Shamako Nobles of Hip Hop Congress's "Sword Of The West" mixtapes and produced Oaklands own actor/mc/singer Duane Johnsons upcoming debut album. (Duane is known for his staring role in the film Town Biz).

"This may not be the end, i may do another album but for now i gotta go on my journey to something else, im real spiritual like that" says Seven.
Most of Sevens music has been criticized for being too raw, called drug music or said is "too left field".  While most who listen to it can relate it's definately not for the close minded.

"I listen to everything but live lo fi weirdo music myself and that comes out in the stuff i make fir myself. My solo stuff is me just trying be as creatively honest with myself as possible. Working with other artists, alot of times they request to recreate something from sonething. I've never been into sampling. Anyways, If i ever do another album i'll do it in Hd for the fans and critics lol". - Seven

Though most of his time in the industry has been spent helping other artists, he's had to deal with contriversial politics, rumors that he is mentally unstable, speculation over his sexuality, accusations of living a hard drug lifestyle and other artists flat out jacking his style for their own.

"The industry is filled with alot if beautifly broken individuals and things get crazy when you put all that creativity/imagination together. If you dont know how to play the game the players will gang up and try to play you lol. I used to take it personal when fools would sleep on me but borrow my influence at the same time, now im just glad to contribute and inspire. At the end of the day what matters is that you played your part weither its good or bad. We'll all have a part we must know when to play. I feel like i played mine in music for what it was now i've got other roles. Can't say its the end if my solo music though, i don't know that answer but for now it seems so". - Seven

Not Them - BIOGRAPHY
Hiphop

The wordsmiths Gentleman J and The Dirt Merchant met in film school at Full Sail University. After a couple drunken freestyles at parties the dynamic duo decided to attempt writing songs, which never happened. It wasn’t until chance put them in the same house, aptly dubbed “The Stronghold”, where the Hip Hop magic began.

If every aspect of hip hop were in a digital picture, then Not Them! uses every single pixel in the frame.

They are an uber imaginative, poetically inclined, trail mix of soliloquies that are just as fun to hang out with, as they are to listen to.

After all, they are just trying to make friends…. with the world in mind.

Phantom Soul - BIOGRAPHY
Urban/R&B/Hiphop/Rap

Phantom Soul was born Jamison Wallen in Cleveland, OH. The youngest of three, he grew up with two older sisters and a single mother. As a child his home was filled with all types of music from the Beatles to opera, courtesy of his stepfather, as well as folk singers and songwriters like James Taylor and Carol King. Cleveland’s cultural diversity played a major role in exposing him at an early age to a wide variety of music. Due to the fact that his friends primarily listened to hip-hop, he quickly discovered the album the “Great Adventures of Slick Rick” and it was then that his love of hip-hop truly began. He soon came to find that while he had an appreciation for all forms of music there was one style that spoke to him on a personal level, rhythm and blues.  While there were many singers that had an effect on him it was the first Boyz II Men album that really led him to the realization that he loved to sing. Even though he was broadening his fondness for music, hip-hop was always there as the most powerful influence which is why, though the style may change, there are often elements of hip-hop floating just beneath the surface of every project. He is often quoted as saying, “I sing R&B, but I do it with a hip-hop heart.”

In his teenage years he spent time in choirs and collaborated with other singers solely for fun.  This ultimately led to the casual joining of forces with some friends who were excited about the prospect of making music. Before long a regular group of producers, rappers and singers had banded together to create a very talented crew. They made some excellent music and put out a mixtape but the lack of vision and direction led the members in different directions. He then began singing around his house and creating his own song ideas. His first recorded song idea as an individual artist was, “My Version of the Blues”.

After high school, Phantom moved to Queens, New York to pursue a work opportunity, as well as work on his music. He spent time in home studios throughout Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx collaborating with other like minded musicians and was able to assist in a few projects.  Working with experienced producers allowed him to sharpen his skills however he wasn’t quite
ready to chase the dream.

He now lives and creates in Tampa, FL. He’s finally ready.
